Nachi Goat Breed: Facts, Origin and Characteristics

Nachi goats are the dancing goat breed specifically found in Pakistan.

When it comes to elegance, they are quite special. Their distinct walking style ensures that people of all ages are attracted.

Without this breed, goat displays are inadequate, and when they are included in multi-breed shows, they undoubtedly draw the biggest crowds.

For whatever reason it may be, Nachi goats could prove to be a valuable addition to your goat tribe.

But before you can do that, let’s take a closer look at this animal.

The most prevalent districts where this goat breed is seen include Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Multan, and Jhang. Even though these are Punjabi areas, Nachi goats have been taken to other districts as well.

Research shows that the first and foremost use of Nachi goats is rearing them for their unique dancing gait. However, they also have loads of secondary benefits.

The goats are sacrificed every now and then for meat consumption, but it isn’t that common. Usually, older Nachi goats that can’t move and dance like before meet this fate.

Except for meat consumption, their hair comes in handy as well. Before summer arrives, many of these animals have their hair cut off for making rugs.

Nachi is a one-of-a-kind genetic characteristic, not just in Pakistan but across the global goat community. It stands out because of its natural dance gait thanks to the unique genetic makeup.

The word ‘Nach’ means dancing, and ‘Nachi’ itself means having dancing traits. As far as local languages are concerned, the word may also be called ‘Naouchi.’

Since the forearm’s upper joint and shoulder joints are not firmly connected in Nachis, these animals are unable to leap as easily as other goat types.

Even the young ones are challenging to manage as they initially have trouble standing up and can need help with feeding.

This goat breed walks in a partly circular pattern with their pastern and feet, and they dance with their heads raised high.

Some people may find it interesting to know that Nachi goats have a flocking instinct that makes them stick together. This attribute makes them follow the herder more frequently than other goats.

Hence, the goats that perfect this trait can perform better than others in Nachi goat competitions, letting them move according to the rhythm of their herder.

According to researchers, goats prefer to browse rather than graze, and this is especially true among Nachis. Fighting conduct is also distinctive in this breed, among other behavioral traits.

Males compete for supremacy and breeding privilege, but their battle styles vary. Bucks may not stand strong on their back legs and fall down aggressively to lock horns like other species do because their hind legs are short.

They slam their heads on the side while upright, with frequent frontal blows. Typical shoving and bumping is also prevalent in this breed, as it is in other varieties.

Mating behavior differs as well, as landing after mating sessions usually results in the bucks dropping to the ground.

Nachi goat numbers have declined over the years, owing to evolving village lifestyles. These beautiful goats are mostly kept for their pleasant walks. Moreover, they can’t cover long distances because of tiring easily.

However, Nachi goats are in a league of their own when it comes to dancing competitions. They receive the most recognition at goat competitions or other animal exhibitions.

Whereas other goat varieties compete in categories like weight, appearance, and milk production, only Nachis perform in walking and dancing contests.

Additionally, these goat shows judge their capability to serve the herder, and all the winning does are awarded with turbans on the head.

Like every other goat, Nachis are evaluated in order to choose an appealing animal that is sturdy and meets quality criteria.

Crossbreeds between Nachi and other breeds have a gait that is somewhere between a natural and dancing type.

Since the gait of purebreds differs from that of crossbred Nachis, even 75% Nachi goat varieties can be distinguished quite clearly.

Hence, animals should be assessed for their particular body characteristics, but assessment would be incomplete until they are capable of walking independently.

It must also be remembered that Nachi goats like to move while grouped, so when concentrating on a single goat, others should walk alongside it.

There are several methods for grouping and organizing different body parts in order to judge the Nachi breed. Most breeders firstly classify the goats as meat, dairy, or dual function.

As a goat farmer, this corresponds to the primary rearing goal, or essentially the reason why many people keep a particular goat variety.

Nachi is used as a rent goat sometimes for different functions.

A beautiful walking and dancing manner with sufficient milk provision capacity is the clear goal for Nachi goats.  For evaluating the does, milk-producing capacity or overall dairy features will be significant, but traits unique to the Nachi breed will also be essential, with the same going for bucks.

Nachis are about as tall as Beetals in size. Taller does are desired, but slender ones are not. Animals with a healthy height are usually preferred. Since the same eligibility requirements apply to the goat’s body length, people also prefer a longer length.

Body length in these animals ranges from 80 centimeters in does to approximately 10 centimeters longer in bucks. Bucks and does average in height of about 98cm and 88cm at the withers, respectively. Nachi is considered one of the giant goat breeds.

In mating does, adult body mass differs and can range from 60 kg to more than 80 kg, with reproducing males reaching over 80 kg.

Nachi goats’ primary color is black. Other colors are permitted, however, since Nachis come with almost any fur. Thanks to many breeders, grey is also being kept in fashion. There are also multi – colored and spotted varieties that are seen from time to time. Purple Nachi goats have also been observed.

Even though the coat may be short, it’s definitely not as short as the Beetal, but also nowhere near as long as a Kaghani, Gulabi goat, or Jattal goat.

The animal coats are typically chopped once per year, only before the summer season. Though animals with short hair coats have a better look, there’s no coat bias until it’s decided in advance that a specific exhibition will indeed be conducted at a particular time during the year.

Because it’s the primary goal of raising Nachi goats, gait in does is incredibly valued. The two most important characteristics are semi-circular front toe motion and small steps. When these animals walk, the neck should be straight and upright.

The ideal characteristics are a sturdy manner and an elegant style. Does must have a feminine physique through the shoulders, neck, and head, while the bucks have a more rugged appearance.

When the entire body combines seamlessly from front to back, grace and harmony are achieved.

Smooth merging of different parts is expected, but this can never be flawless in weak animals because the shoulder blade would be clearly visible.

Animals with a lot of energy and robustness are always attractive. These goats, particularly the males, should be aware and assertive to a certain extent. Read our guide on 171+ Pet Goat Names
